Course ID

The “Course ID” will be generated by ISIS (Peoplesoft), in the format:  TERM-THEUA-SUBJECT-COURSE_CATALOG#-SEC###-CLASS# Examples:
  • 1103-THEUA-HIST-1123-SEC003-13396
  • 1099-THEUA-NURS-3742-SEC001-9186
  • 1086-THEUA-OMGT-5003-SEC951-6434
“Parent” Courses of combined sections will have a Course ID in the following format: MASTER-TERM-THEUA-COURSE_CATALOG#-SEC###. The parent Course ID will be based on the child course with the LOWEST class number. Example:
MASTER-1159-THEUA-ANTH-4553-SEC001  [parent, not in SIS], with Child Courses:

  • 1159-THEUA-ANTH-4553-SEC001-1607  [child course / sis]
  • 1159-THEUA-ANTH-4553-SEC001-1618  [child course / sis]
  • 1159-THEUA-GEOS-4553-SEC001-3856  [child course / sis]
  • 1159-THEUA-GEOS-4553-SEC001-3857  [child course / sis]

TERM Designations

  • The TERM naming convention is a complex beast, comprised of 4 numerics.
  • The first digital always equals “1”, I’ll assume this might change in 2104.
  • Digits #2 & #3 = the the last 2 digits of the year (09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, etc)
  • The fourth, and last digit is dependent on the Term itself
    • 2 = Spring Independent Study [The Catalog# also ends with the letter “I”]
    • 3 = Spring
    • 5 = Summer Independent Study [The Catalog# also ends with the letter “I”]
    • 6 = Summer
    • 8 = Fall Independent Study [The Catalog# also ends with the letter “I”]
    • 9 = Fall

Course Name

After researching “best practices” from other Universities for transition, conclusions so far:

The “Course Name” is based on the following:  COURSE CATALOG# – Course Description (COURSE ID) Examples:
  • BIOL 4104 – Taxonomy of Flowering Plants (1103-THEUA-BIOL-4104-SEC001-10468)
  • BIOL 4104 – Taxonomy of Flowering Plants (1103-THEUA-BIOL-4104-SEC001-7096)
This example refers to undergraduate AND graduate sections of the same course, meeting at the same time. Notes:
  • Having the term and section information is useful for instructors trying to differentiate their classes
  • Undergraduate and Graduate sections of the same class may have the same section number
  • The FileMaker database has been modified to generate the full Course Name from the ISIS information

Course List

By default, the “Course List” module  displays: COURSE ID: COURSE NAME So the “Course List” looks like:
  • bbstaff: Blackboard Support Staff Headquarters
  • 1103-THEUA-BIOL-1543-SEC001-12345: BIOL 1543 – Principles of Biology
This has been modified to ONLY show the Course Name, which will include the Course ID as part of the description.
