The existing Kaltura integration in Blackboard Learn is based on a legacy framework (Building Blocks, aka “B2”), which will end-of-life after December 31, 2023.

For Spring 2023, we will enable system-wide a new integration type, based on the 1EdTech Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) 1.3 (LTI Advantage, LTIA) standard.   Kaltura media in Blackboard Learn Ultra Course View (UCV) courses have already been using a version of LTI, and those existing links will be upgraded and continue to work.  For courses using the Original Course View (OCV), you will no longer be able to use the existing Kaltura Media tool to add new media, but existing ones should continue to function. In the future, there is a chance for a conversion tool for existing B2 Kaltura media placements prior to them not-functioning after December 2023.i

These existing tools will be removed in Original Course View courses:

  • Kaltura Media, found in
    • Content Area: Build Content –> Mashups –> Kaltura Media
    • Content Editor: Add content –> Kaltura Media
    • Content Area: Tools –> Kaltura Media
  • Kaltura Video Quiz, found in
    • Content Area: Assessments –> Kaltura Video Quiz
  • Kaltura Media Gallery, found in
    • Content Area: Tools –> Media Gallery
    • Course Tools –> Media Gallery
    • Tools Area (linked in the student Course menu) –> Media Gallery
    • Course Menu –> Kaltura Media Gallery (not in the default menu)

and the following LTIA tools will be added:

  • Kaltura Media, found in
    • Content Area: Build Content –> Kaltura Media
      • This will allow you to create a LINK to a Kaltura entry
    • Content Editor: Add content –> Kaltura Media
      • This will allow you to embed a Kaltura entry in the Content Editor.
      • The equivalent of the original Kaltura Media Mashup, would be to Create an Item, then add the Kaltura entry to the item.  The added benefit of this will be the ability to add additional text and attachments to supplement the media.
  • Kaltura Media Gallery, found in
    • Content Area: Build Content –> Kaltura Media Gallery
      • This will allow you to create a link to the course Kaltura Media Gallery. Following the link will allow media to be viewed by students. Instructors and teaching assistants can add media to the gallery.
    • Content Area: Tools –> Kaltura Media Gallery
      • This will allow you to create a link to the course Kaltura Media Gallery. Following the link will allow media to be viewed by students. Instructors and teaching assistants can add media to the gallery.
    • Course Menu —> Tools –> Kaltura Media Gallery
      • Following the link will allow media to be viewed by students. Instructors and teaching assistants can add media to the gallery.
      • The Tools Area may be removed in some courses.  It can be re-added using the (+) at the top of the course menu, by adding a Tool link and  the “Tools Area” Type.
    • Course Menu –> Kaltura Media Gallery
      • This tool is not in the default course menu, but can be added using the (+) at the top of the course menu, by adding a Tool link and  the “Kaltura Media Gallery” Type.
  • Kaltura Video Quiz, found in
    • Content Area: Build Content –> Kaltura Video Quiz
    • Note: While it is technically possible to add a “Kaltura Video Quiz” using “Add Content” in the Content Editor, this will not create a Grade Center column, and thus this workflow should not be used.
  • Kaltura My Media
    • Base Navigation –> Tools –> Kaltura My Media
    • The current tool is already using the new integration.
    • Some users may need to Allow Learn Authorization upon first access.

Workflow changes in Original Course View courses:

  • Kaltura Media
    • The “Kaltura Media” tool under “Build Content” will add a link to the Kaltura entry. The media thumbnail will not be displayed.
    • In the Content Editor, under “Add Content”, you can choose “Kaltura Media”. This will create an inline version of the video, with the video preview displayed on the page. The closest equivalent of the original Kaltura Media Mashup, would be to Create an Item, then add the Kaltura entry to the item.  The added benefit of this will be the ability to add additional text and attachments to supplement the media.
  • Media Gallery:
    • This will no longer be accessed using the Course Tools menu under Course Management.
    • Build Content –> Kaltura Media Gallery will create a link to the Media Gallery in a Content Area.
    • Tools –> Kaltura Media Gallery will create a link to the Media Gallery in a Content Area.
    • Course Menu —> Tools –> Kaltura Media Gallery links to the Media Gallery.
    • Course Menu –> Kaltura Media Gallery.  If added, a link to the Media Gallery will appear directly in the course menu.
  • Kaltura Video Quiz
    • This will no longer be listed under the “Assessments” menu.  It will be under “Build Content”.
    • Note: While it is technically possible to add a “Kaltura Video Quiz” using “Add Content” in the Content Editor, this will not create a Grade Center column, and thus this workflow should not be used.

The only change in Ultra Course View courses will be a renaming of the tools

  • Create –> Content Market –> “Kaltura Embed (Ultra)” will be “Kaltura Media”
  • Create –> Content Market –> “Kaltura Media Gallery (Ultra Content Tool)” will be “Kaltura Media Gallery”
  • Create –> Content Market –> “Kaltura Media Gallery (Ultra)” will be “Kaltura Media Gallery”
  • Create –> Content Market –> “Kaltura Video Quiz (Ultra)” will be “Kaltura Video Quiz”
  • Books & Tools –> “Kaltura Media Gallery (Ultra)” will be “Kaltura Media Gallery”
